Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Livingstone to Mfuwe & South Luangwa National Park

This 6 Day South Luangwa Tented Camping Safari starts with a flight from Livingstone to Mfuwe, near South Luangwa National Park. From Mfuwe airport you are transferred to the tented lodge just outside of the national park, in the Mfuwe area.

Settle into your luxury tent and relax at the lodge, resting up after your travels. Have lunch at the camp restaurant and take it easy until tea time, at about 3:30 pm, when you meet with your guides. Your guides fill you in on what to expect out in the untamed bush and discuss any special interests your group may have with you over tea.

Then it is time to venture out into the untamed wilderness that is South Luangwa National Park, one of Africa’s top game parks.

We depart on our open 4×4 game drive at about 4:00 pm. The game drives are conducted in fully-equipped 4×4 Land Cruisers, customized for game viewing in Africa. The open safari vehicles are ideal for wildlife photography, offering excellent visibility and immersing you in the wild environment. Your professional guides track down wildlife in Luangwa Valley drawing on their intimate knowledge, gained over years of experience.

As dusk approaches, we stop in a scenic location to enjoy sundowners while we watch the sunset. After watching the dramatic colours of sunset we proceed through the bush using a spotlight to light the way and locate nocturnal creatures in the fading light. As darkness falls our chances of sighting elusive nocturnal animals increases. Shy night time creatures we may encounter range from porcupines to leopards and owls.

Returning to the lodge we tuck into a tasty dinner and unwind at the bar or around the campfire. Tonight you fall asleep in a spacious safari tent next to the river, listening to the sounds of nearby animals and birds.

  • Meals included: Lunch & Dinner

Please note: the flight from Livingstone is included in the tour price with your guide meeting you at Mfuwe airport.

Day 2 – 5: Mfuwe & South Luangwa National Park

Days two to five are all about experiencing the unique flora, fauna and landscapes of South Luangwa National Park, as well as getting a taste of Zambian culture and life.

Your qualified guides take you on early morning and late afternoon game drives in open 4×4 vehicles. The morning game drives depart after a light breakfast at the lodge (at about 5:30 am), returning from South Luangwa Park at about 10:00 am for brunch. After a breakfast or lunch style brunch, you are free to snooze, swim in the pool or read a book in the shade.  At about 4:00 pm we set off on a sunset game drive in South Luangwa, stopping for sundowners as the sun dips below the horizon. The game drive continues into the night, with the aid of spotlights. The thrilling night drive ends back at the lodge where dinner is served at about 8:00 pm. The remainder of the evening is free for you to relax in the bar or beside the campfire, reliving the adventures of your day in the Zambian wilderness. At the end of the day retreat to your comfortable safari tent, listen to the sounds of nature and enjoy some stargazing.

In addition to 4×4 game drives, you will also have the chance to embark on early morning game walks in South Luangwa National Park during the dry season (about June to October). South Luangwa is heralded as the birthplace of African walking safaris offering outstanding game viewing on foot. Other activities offered at the lodge include cultural tours to nearby Mfuwe village, which include visits to some of the local community and conservation projects. One of the stops is at the Luangwa Conservation & Community Fund (LCCF), a local anti-poaching and wildlife conservation centre.

South Luangwa is a world-renowned game viewing destination, hosting a rich array and incredible abundance of wildlife and bird species. The morning bush walks are ideal for experiencing the smaller creatures and plants of Luangwa up close, giving you time to soak up the details of this pristine ecosystem. Bush walks last for three to four hours, and can also be combined with morning game drives (two hours of walking and two driving). The spotlit night drives, on the other hand, offer an exhilarating adventure and chance encounters with carnivores such as lion, civet, genet, hyena and even leopard. The guides are there to answer questions and share their wealth of knowledge with you as they reveal the wonders of South Luangwa to you.

  • Meals included: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
