Days 2 – 3: Maun to Moremi Game Reserve & Khwai, Botswana

Today we set out in our 4×4 open Land Cruiser for Moremi Game Reserve and the start of some thrilling wildlife viewing.

Named for Chief Moremi, the reserve was designated a game reserve, rather than a national park, so that the resident bushman could continue living there. Although not the largest of Botswana’s reserves, Moremi is a surprisingly diverse, combining mopane woodland and acacia forests, floodplains and lagoons.

The varied habitats provide for a vast array of wildlife species including Cape buffalo, Angolan giraffe, black rhinoceros, lion, elephant, hippopotamus, zebra, cheetah, hyena, jackal, impala, and red lechwe. Cape wild dogs are found in Moremi and have been the subject of a project run in the area since 1989, which is why these animals are often seen wearing collars.

Bird lovers will not be disappointed as the reserve is home to almost 500 species of bird ranging from water birds to forest dwellers.

The Khwai River forms the northern border of Moremi Game Reserve and the Khwai community live on its northern banks. Characterised by a varied ecosystem of a patchwork of lagoons, shallow flooded pans, open grass plains and woodland forests, Khwai is known for its prolific wildlife and is, undoubtedly, one of the most scenic areas in Botswana.

At sunset we arrive at our private campsite, an isolated speck in the bush, where it seems we are the first to discover this exclusive campsite. Everything we need is brought to the campsite and we make sure we leave nothing behind.

We may spend a second night here, or, depending on wildlife movement, road and weather conditions we may choose to move to another site, wildlife viewing as we travel. The beauty of a small, private group is that it allows for this flexibility.

Our camp assistant caters to our needs, setting up the campsite whilst guests relax after their exciting days of wildlife viewing.

  • Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
  • Accommodation: Camping
  • Travel: Approximately 120 Km

Day 4: Moremi Game Reserve to Maun, Botswana

Tonight dinner is served at our lodge.
