Itinerary for this Tour
Day 1: Johannesburg to Greater Kruger National Park – South Africa
This Kruger Backpackers Camping Safari begins early on day one, with departures from Johannesburg city starting at around 5h30 in the morning.
We travel some 570 km’s northeast through the Limpopo Province of South Africa from the dynamic city of Johannesburg, known as Egoli – the ‘City of Gold’. After our 8 to 9 hour journey (including en route stops) we enter the Greater Kruger Park area, where our safari camp is located. The Greater Kruger Park is South Africa’s largest collective protected area, covering some two million hectares of African wilderness. The Greater Kruger consists of Kruger National Park proper and several private game reserves that share unfenced borders with the national park.
Arriving at our lodge camp inside a private game reserve of Greater Kruger we enjoy a delicious lunch. Then there is some free time to relax at the bush camp before we set off on our first exciting 4×4 game drive in the Greater Kruger. We venture into the private game reserve in open 4×4 safari vehicles on this late afternoon to evening game drive. The game drive takes us in search of the Big Five of Africa and nocturnal wildlife species that come out after dark. Along the way, we stop at a watering hole in the bush to watch the wild animals and enjoy some sundowners before proceeding into the night with powerful spotlights.
After our first wildlife adventure, we return to the safari camp for a hearty traditional South African dinner followed by an evening of leisure around the open campfire in this beautiful bush environment.

Today we rise early in the morning and drive to nearby Kruger National Park proper. Look forward to a full day of game viewing in this outstanding Big Five wilderness area. Kruger is a world-famous safari destination, especially for sighting the Big Five of Africa – lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo.
We explore Kruger Park in search of the abundance of wildlife and birds found in this vast game reserve. The 19 485 km² Kruger National Park, one of Africa’s biggest game parks, is home to about 150 mammal species, more than 500 bird species and 100 reptile species, among other life forms. We drive to parts of the Kruger that are known for excellent game sighting opportunities, to improve our chances of spotting wild animals and other creatures. Common sightings include hippos, giraffes, zebras, various antelope species and endangered African Wild Dogs.
While in the bush we stop for breakfast at one of the shaded picnic spots inside Kruger National Park, continuing our exploration after breakfast. For the remainder of the day, we go in search of Kruger’s phenomenal animal and bird life, visiting active watering holes and pausing for lunch (own account) at one of the rest camps in Kruger.
