4 Day Southern Kruger Tented Camp Safari

Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Johannesburg to Kruger National Park Concession – South Africa

Our Southern Kruger Tented Camp Safari begins with collection from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg at about 07:45 this morning. 

Leaving Gauteng the shuttle transfers you to White River in the Mpumalanga Lowveld. Your guide meets you in White River and drives you to the world-famous Kruger National Park. Our tented safari camp is situated on a private wildlife concession inside Kruger Park, not far from Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. Settle in at the camp, take a swim and freshen up, before our late afternoon game drive.

Heading into the private concession area in an open 4×4 safari vehicle, we experience the sights, sounds and smells of the African bushveld up close. Your expert guide tracks down wildlife in the area and points out fascinating details of the wild environment. We may encounter some big game species, including the Big Five of Africa (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant), and a rich variety of birds.

After our sunset game drive we return to camp for a hearty dinner and free time to chill out in the lounge and bar, or around the flickering campfire.

Private Kruger Concession Area

The tented camp is located on a wildlife concession area, with traversing rights in Kruger National Park. The private concession covers about 11 000 hectares of untamed bushveld belonging to the local Nkambeni community. The concession area is in the southwestern part of Kruger, near Numbi Gate, Shabeni Koppie and the Pretoriuskop Rest Camp. 

In the private concession, you can enjoy open vehicle game drives, with a bush braai (barbecue) option on sunset game drives, as well as joining guided nature walks. Classical game species are frequently sighted in the concession, including elephants, giraffes, buffalos, baboons and numerous antelope species. 

Day 2: Kruger National Park – South Africa

On day two we explore the game-rich southern region of Kruger National Park. Setting off into Kruger in our open safari vehicle early this morning an excitng day of game viewing awaits. 

Keep your eyes open, cameras and binoculars ready, as we proceed through this prime Big Five territory, searching out wildlife and birds. After game viewing for a while we stop for a breakfast break. We have our packed breakfast from the lodge at one of the rest camps in the park. The camps offer shady picnic areas, serviced ablutions and various other facilities.

After breakfast, the game viewing adventures continue. Your experienced guide tells you more about the remarkable flora and fauna of Kruger, showing you the fascinating details of this diverse wild habitat. Likely sightings include giraffes, zebras, antelopes, elephants, buffalos and various birds. 

Stopping for lunch (own expense) at one of the rest camps, we take time out to rest in the shade and enjoy the camp facilities. After our lunch break, we head back out into the bush in our 4×4 vehicle. Watch closely for predators and other game as we leave Kruger Park.  

Tonight we have dinner in the spacious dining area at camp and unwind after our action-packed day in Kruger.

About Kruger National Park

One of the top game parks in Africa, Kruger is a world famous safari destination and the premier national park in South Africa.

Kruger Park covers about 19485 km² of undeveloped wilderness, incorporating five vegetation zones across 16 landscapes in the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces of South Africa. The sheer size of the reserve makes it extraordinary, as do the huge numbers of wildlife and the staggering diversity of plants, animals and birds. About 147 mammal species, 507 bird species, 114 reptile species, 34 amphibian species and 49 fish species are found in Kruger Park, along with all kinds of insects, trees and other plants.

Healthy populations of Africa’s Big Five roam Kruger Park, making it a prime Big Five safari destination. An abundance of classical big game species inhabit Kruger, ranging from zebra, giraffe and hippo to cheetah, hyena and African wild dog. There are a large array of antelopes here, including kudu, springbok, eland, sable, roan, impala, waterbuck and tsessebe.

Day 3: Private Kruger Concession Area – South Africa

We are up early on day three for our morning bush walk in the private concession area of Kruger Park. 

Heading into the Big Five African bush with your armed guide is a thrilling way to start the day! You may come face-to-face with one of the Big Five or other large mammals, on your guided walk. 

After exploring the bushveld on foot, getting up close to the flora and fauna, we return to camp for breakfast. There are no more scheduled activities included in the itinerary for today, leaving you free to relax at the lodge or embark on optional activities (extra cost) of your choice.

Optional activities include afternoon game walks in the private concession area and sunset game drives in open 4×4 vehicles. You also have the option of doing a night game drive in the wildlife concession and joining a traditional South African style braai (barbecue) in a scenic bush location.

Day 4: Kruger Concession Area to Johannesburg – South Africa

This morning we get up early and head out into the private concession area of Kruger on a final game drive. Driving through the wild woodlands and savannahs, your experienced guide searches for wildlife and points out interesting sights. Enjoy your last bit of time out in the African bushveld surrounded by untamed nature.

After our morning game drive we return to the tented camp for breakfast and get ready to leave. We then take you to White River, where the shuttle collects you for the return transfer to Johannesburg.

The shuttle drops you off at OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where our memorable Southern Kruger Park Safari ends.

Kruger Concession Tented Camp

On this safari we stay at a tented camp in a private wildlife concession, accessed via the Numbi Gate entrance to Kruger Park. This wildlife concession area is located inside Kruger National Park, with traversing rights in the official park. 

Accommodation is in en-suite tented rooms raised on wooden platforms with deck areas. The luxury timber and canvas suites have been designed to have a low environmental impact on the natural surroundings. Each permanent tent features air-conditioning and is fitted with comfortable beds, basic furniture, tea and coffee stations and mosquito nets. The en-suite bathrooms are fitted with indoor and outdoor showers, a toilet and a basin.

The tented camp has a big swimming pool with a deck area and deck chairs for lazing around. From the pool area, hippos, other wildlife and birds are often spotted at the nearby dam. The main lodge facilities include a bar and lounge area, a curio shop, a spacious restaurant with an outdoor dining deck and open-air boma areas.
