Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Johannesburg to Kruger National Park Concession Area – South Africa

At the start of this Southern Kruger Park Safari our shuttle transfers you from the OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg to Hazyview in the Mpumalanga Province of South Africa. Leaving the megacity at about 07h45 we travel east into the Mpumalanga Lowveld, the top safari region of South Africa.

Arriving in Hazyview, your guide is there to meet you and drive you to the tented lodge nearby. Our tented camp is located in a private concession area within Kruger National Park. South Africa’s permier wildlife destination, Kruger is one of the most famous game parks in the world.

Later this afternoon we embark on our first game viewing drive inside the private concession area. The concession area is home to the classical big game species of Africa, including the Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, buffalo and elephant). Numerous birds and smaller creatures are also found here, so keep your eyes peeled.

Private Kruger Concession Area

The wildlife concession area covers about 11 000 hectares of unspoilt Lowveld habitat, falling within Kruger National Park. This private concession area is owned by the Nkambeni community and lies near Shabeni Koppie and the Pretoriuskop Rest Camp of Kruger.

The tented lodge in the concession offers open vehicle 4×4 game drives during the day and at night, as well as bush walks. On the sunset game drives, guests can also enjoy bush barbecues (braais) in this private concession area.

In the concession area elephants, giraffes, buffalos, zebras, baboons, hippos and a variety of antelope species are often spotted, along with other wild animals and birds. The vegetation is typical savannah woodland with grassy plains and gentle hills, providing habitat for a variety of animals and birds.

Day 2: Kruger National Park – South Africa

We spend the whole of day two exploring Kruger National Park on open 4×4 game drives. Your experienced guide takes you in search of the renowned big game species, smaller creatures and birds of this legenedary national park. While in Kruger, your guide shares his or her intimate knowledge of the African bushveld with you, answering questions and pointing out interesting sightings.

Kruger is a birding hotspot, so bird watchers are in for a real treat. Bird species include African fish eagle, lilac-breasted roller, bateleur, martial eagle, kori bustard, southern ground-hornbill and grey-headed parrot. The park is also home to an impressive array of antelopes, such as eland, kudu, waterbuck, nyala, bushbuck, roan and sable antelopes, impala, hartebeest, springbok, duiker and tsessebe. Predators range from jackals, hyenas, foxes and African wild dogs to servals, civets, genets and cheetahs.

Our game drive takes us to one of the rest camps, where we pause for breakfast and a stretch. The camps are well-equipped, most featuring a shop, cafeteria and restaurant, ablution facilities and a swimming pool. After the breakfast stop we continue our game drive until lunch time, when we stop in at a rest camp again. For lunch you have the option of purchasing light snacks and meals from the shop or dining at the camp restaurant. After lunch and a rest we head back into the wilderness.

In the afternoon we make our way out of Kruger and back to the concession area where our tented lodge is located. Take a dip in the pool, have a drink at the bar and relax in the lounge areas of the camp.

About Kruger National Park

South Africa’s leading national park and one of Africa’s finest wildlife destinations, Kruger National Park is a world-famous African safari destination. The game park incorporates about 19485 km² of unspoilt bushveld in northeastern South Africa – covering an area similar to the size of Wales or Israel.

Kruger is a prime Big Five safari destination, boasting large populations of Africa’s Big Five. In addition to the Big Five, the reserve encompasses an incredible diversity of fauna and flora forming roughly six ecosystems. Some 147 mammal species, over 500 bird species and 114 reptile species have been recorded in Kruger Park. Large mammals include hippo, cheetah, jackal, hyena, giraffe, zebra, African wild dog, plenty of antelope species and other herbivores.

The park was first established by the president of the Transvaal, Paul Kruger, in 1898 when it was proclaimed as Sabie Game Reserve. Kruger hosts significant and interesting historical, geological and archeological sights, in addition to its rich animal, plant and bird life.

Day 3: Kruger Concession Area to Johannesburg – South Africa

On day three, we get up early for a final game drive in the private concession area. With some luck we may encounter animals that have eluded us thus far, as mornings are ideal for wildlife spotting.

After our game drive in the concession area, we return to the tented lodge for a delicious breakfast and pack up for our return journey to Johannesburg. The shuttle picks you up in Hazyview and transfers you back to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg, where this short Southern Kruger Safari ends.
