Itinerary for this Tour

Day 1: Maun, Botswana

Our guide is waiting to welcome us at Maun Airport on our arrival.  If you have pre-booked a flight over the Okavango Delta now is the time for this enchanting experience. (NB for guest’s account and must be pre-booked.)

Viewed from the air the Okavango Delta unfolds to reveal its vastness, a watery wonderland home to a large variety of wildlife. This aerial view is a photographer’s dream – lookout for elephants wandering through the wetland and hippo wallowing in the channels.

From here we travel the short journey, approximately 90 minutes, to our camp for tonight located near Gomoti Lagoon.

This camp is intentionally rustic, but that doesn’t mean that comfort and cleanliness have been compromised.

The intimate camp can only accommodate 16 guests in the eight dome tents set on wooden decks. Each tent has en-suite facilities with showers, a handbasin and a chemical toilet. They are fitted with solar lights, twin beds with comfortable mattresses, pillows, linen and towels. There is a separate lounge area, where guests may play games, birdwatch or just relax with fellow guests.

We spend the rest of the day and evening relaxing at camp, dining under the African skies around the campfire.

Day 2 & 3: Okavango Area of Moremi, Botswana

On Day 2 we take a leisurely, wildlife viewing transfer to our camp in the Okavango area of Moremi Game Reserve.

We arrive to find the camp crew has set up camp and lunch is ready, prepared by the camp chef. Our days here are spent on viewing the wildlife in this oasis as well as taking a boat tour of the delta, which is great for photo opportunities. With a guaranteed window seat in our safari vehicle, guests don’t miss any of the action.

The Okavango Delta is spread over an area of between six and fifteen thousand square kilometres of Kalahari Desert. Its existence is due to the Kavango River which flows from the Angolan Highlands, across Namibia’s Caprivi Strip and into the harsh Kalahari Desert.

The area is characterised by many small islands, however Chief’s Island, originally the hunting grounds of Chief Moremi, is a much larger tract of land and a popular spot for the wildlife when the water rises.

The Okavango oasis in this otherwise dry area is known for its superb wildlife, with large populations of mammals and excellent birding, particularly in the breeding season.

It is estimated that there are over 200 000 mammals in and around the Delta, but some of them do not make this their permanent home. Many leave when the summer rains arrive in search of fields of grass to graze and trees to browse, then make their way back as winter approaches.

Each day ends with a superb three-course dinner prepared by the camp chef and unwinding around the campfire.

We retire to our tents which come complete with two camp beds with high-density foam mattress, bed linen and pillow. and an ‘Alfresco’ en-suite bathroom with warm bucket shower, bath towel, hand towel, hand basin and porta-potti toilet.

Day 4 & 5: Khwai Area of Moremi, Botswana

Today, after breakfast, we head for the Khwai Floodplains, whilst the camp crew break camp and relocates on the floodplains.

The Khwai Floodplains are sandwiched between Moremi Game Reserve and Chobe National Park and with no fences separating these areas there is a massive amount of wildlife movement here. Khwai is well known as the area to find wild dog and many other predators.

The Khwai River flows through the area and is a popular spot for hippos, waterbuck and crocodiles, whilst the woodlands support antelope, zebra, buffalo and giraffe. The ubiquitous elephant is here and lion, leopard and hyena are often spotted.

The protected ecosystems of Moremi are among the richest and most diverse in Africa. In this 3900 sq kms of reserve, the land merges with the Delta to create floodplains, waterways, lagoons, pools, pans, grasslands and riparian, riverine and mopane forests. This varied terrain makes wildlife viewing in Moremi extremely exciting.

One of the success stories of Moremi Game Reserve is the reintroduction of rhino which was wiped out by poaching, so the reserve can now boast that it is home to the Big 5 of Africa.

There is an option (own expense) to take a two-hour Mokoro excursion. The mokoro is a traditional dug-out boat, which is poled through the waterways of the Okavango by local ‘gondoliers’. The mekoro has become a symbol of the Delta and is a popular way to view the game from a different perspective. Imagine gliding through the papyrus in this tranquil environment, the peace disturbed only by the sounds of the wild.

Each evening we return to camp after our exciting wildlife viewing drives and sundowners in the bush to a delicious 3-course meal prepared by the camp chef.

Replete we gather around the campfire to share stories of the day’s thrilling events.

Day 6: Maun, Botswana

We’re up early this morning and after breakfast, we take a game drive that culminates in Maun.

There may be time whilst here to have lunch at a local restaurant (own expense) or do some shopping before leaving for the airport where, sadly, this Botswana Mobile Camping Safari to Moremi & Khwai comes to an end.

Please note it is possible that on occasion two vehicles may be used which will increase the group size.
